Mikhail Fridman is a Ukrainian-Russian self-made business man. In 2013, Forbes estimated Fridman to have a $16.5 billion net worth elevating him from Russia’s 7th to 2nd richest man in a mere two years. Fridman founded an investment group called Alfa Group Consortium in 1989 with business partners German Khan and Alexey Kuzmichov. Since its creation, Alfa Group Consortium oversees Alfa Capital Management, Rosvodokanal Group, Alfa Strakhovanie Group and A1 Group. Alfa Group’s notable portfolio is comprised of oil and gas, telecom and food retail companies.
Along with serving as Chairman of Supervisory Board for the Alfa Group Consortium, Fridman has earned his spot on the List of Billionaires through his role on the Board of Directors for oil and gas company, TNK-BP, as well as ABH Holdings S.A., VimpelCom Ltd. and X5 Retail Group N.V. Since 2005, the billionaire has functioned as a member of the Public Chamber of Russia and one of Russia’s representatives on the Advisory Board of the Council of Foreign Relations.
Fridman helped found the Russian Jewish Congress in 1996. As a part of his commitment to Jewish initiatives in Russia, he has made large contributions to the European Jewish Fund to support the non-profit’s dedication to tolerance and reconciliation. Additionally, Fridman is a sponsor for Russia’s national literary award, “Big Book,” as well as serving as a board member for a literature center that promotes respect and preservation of Russian culture through creative writing.
Fridman holds a Bachelor of Arts and Science from the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys, has two children, and resides in Russia.
