Michael Hartono and his brother Robert are the owners of the Indonesian company, Djarum, a globally successful clove cigarette manufacturer. Hartono inherited the company following the death of his father, Oei Wie Gwan, in 1963. Since then, the brothers have helped spread the brand to international markets, despite a 2009 U.S. law banning their sale in the United States.

While Djarum is successful, Hartono earned his place on the List of Billionaires primarily through his various business interests in Bank Central Asia, among others. He also controls a luxury shopping mall, and other buildings in Jakarta.

His net worth often lists him as the richest man in Indonesia.
