Net Worth, $45.2 Billion
Source of Wealth, Chairman and CEO of Amazon.com
Founder and CEO of Amazon.com, Jeff Bezos is one of numerous self-made tech billionaires on the List of Billionaires. Since becoming a billionaire, Bezos has invested heavily in space research and other projects with an eye to the future, including the Clock of the Long Now, a clock designed to run for 10,000 years.
In August of 2013, Bezos bought The Washington Post for $250 million in cash. In that same month, the Harvard Business Review named Bezos the second best CEO, behind only Steve Jobs of Apple.
In Forbes’ 2016 Billionaires List, Bezos jumped 10 positions in the rankings from No. 15 last year to No. 5. Forbes valued Bezos’ fortune at $45.2 billion, an increase from last year’s estimate of $34.8 billion.
After graduating from Princeton, Bezos (b. January 12, 1964 in Albuquerque, NM) worked on Wall Street in a computer science role before eventually moving to Washington and founding Amazon.
According to Bezos, Amazon was started in Washington to take advantage of a law at the time allowing exemption from sales tax for businesses not based in the state in which customers made the purchase. By headquartering in Washington, the vast majority of customers would not pay the tax, though recent efforts by state governments have been aimed at closing this loophole.
In 1999, Bezos was named Time magazine’s Person of the Year.
