Iskander Makhmudov was born in 1963 to an ethnic Uzbek family in the former USSR. A Russian citizen, Makhmudov is the 123rd richest person in the world and the 15th richest person in his country. By early 2013, he had amassed a personal fortune of $8.7 billion. He attended Tashkent State University and obtained his degree in Oriental Studies. His wealth comes primarily from having founded Gorno-Metallurgicheskaya Kompaniya (UGMK) Holding. The company is also known as the Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company. It is a non-iron metallurgical company and is the fourth biggest of its kind in Russia.
UGMK also holds the title as being the second biggest producer of copper. Another major source of income for Makhmudov is his interest in Transmasholding, a huge Russian corporation that is the biggest producer of trains. This led him to engage with Russian Railways. Makhmudov was the sole funder for Sochi’s Olympic Shayba ice rink.
