Born in Texas to teachers in 1931, Harold Clark Simmons grew up to be a businessman and billionaire. He entered the banking world in 1952 and bought his first company in 1960. Nearly 15 years later, he was accused of mail and wire fraud; he was later acquitted. Simmons is most well-known for developing leveraged buyout (LBO), a method of purchasing companies and property with a combination of loans and equity.
He owned Contran Corporation and Valhi, Inc. Valhi, Inc.. He was also active in the New York Stock Exchange where he controlled five publicly traded companies including the number one producer of titanium: Titanium Metals Corporations. Throughout the years, he amassed a personal fortune of $10 billion. Simmons passed away December 28, 2013.
