Grupo Mexico is the third largest producer of copper in the world and the biggest mining company in all of Mexico. German Larrea Mota Velasco is Grupo Mexico’s CEO. Velasco was ranked as the third richest person in Mexico by Forbes. Estimates from early 2013 put this Mexico City native’s fortune at $16.7 billion, making him the 30th richest person in the world. Before he became the CEO of Grupo Mexico, Velasco founded the publishing company Grupo Impresa in 1978. He ran the organization until he sold it 1989.
Velasco is an expert in the mining industry, having held high ranking positions in Grupo Mexico since 1981 when he was on the Board of Directors. Later, in 1994, he became the chairman and CEO. He’s also held positions with the Board of the Southern Copper Corporation since the late 1990s, where he served as member, chairman and CEO.
He and his family have control of over half of Grupo Mexico and own over 5,000 kilometers of railroads. Much of those railroads are part of Gurpo Ferroviario Mexicano, where Velasco began serving as chairman and CEO in 1997. His reach extends beyond railroads and mining, however, as he is also a director at Banco Nacional de Mexico.
