A citizen of Russia and Finland, but currently living in Switzerland, Gennady Timchenko reached the List of Billionaires through successful businesses and investments.
Spending a large part of his childhood in the German Democratic Republic, Timchenko’s fluency in German afforded him a position at a young age in the trade department of a power generator manufacturer operated by the Russian government. As more state-run industries began to privatize in the USSR, Timchenko progressed further up the corporate ladder. In 1991, however, he left Russia for Finland where he became involved with numerous businesses and industries.
As his fortune grew, he founded the Volga Group to manage his investments. As an avid fan of ice hockey, tennis and chess, he has helped fund Russian tennis players, founded the chess competition, the Alekhine Memorial, and is currently the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Continental Hockey League.
