Born and raised in and around Los Angeles, Donald Bren made his billions through long-term investment and development in Southern California, particularly Orange County. After purchasing his first home in Newport Beach in 1958, he founded the Bren Company. Five years later he started the Mission Viejo Company, which became the primary home builder and developer for the Mission Viejo community.
In 1977, Bren used his profits to buy a primary stake in the 146-year old Irvine Company. Over the next two decades, he bought out the other shareholders to own the company in its entirety. Eventually raking in enough to earn him a place on the List of Billionaires.
Because of his long-term influence in Orange County, numerous philanthropic donations to California universities and more, he is often cited as one of the most powerful people in California.
He currently lives in Newport Beach with his third wife.
