As the founder and managing director of Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Limited (SUN PHARMA), Dilip Shanghvi has steadily moved up the ranks of India’s richest billionaires and currently occupies third.
Born in Mumbair, India, Shanghvi attended the University of Calcutta where he earned a Bachelor’s of Commerce degree.
Sun Pharma was founded by Shanghvi in 1983 and posted a revenue in its first year of only $20,000, but consistently grew into a multi-national corporation worth many billions of dollars. Shanghvi’s stock holding in the company and other ventures has earned his spot on the List of Billionaires. This is in part thanks to its rank as the most popular Indian pharmaceutical in the United States for generic prescription medication. Overall, it ranks fifth in size among Indian companies in the U.S.
Shanghvi is also the Chairman and Managing Director of the R&D offshoot of Sun Pharma, Sun Pharmaceutical Advanced Research Company Ltd., the first fully R&D-focused company listed on the Indian Stock Exchange.
