Often listed as the third richest man in Mexico, Alberto Baillères is in the List of Billionaires because of a wide range of business ventures.
Primarily, Baillères owns the holding company Grupo Bal, which controls a wide range of subsidiaries, including
- Peñoles: Based in Mexico City, the mining company is the largest producer of silver in the world. It also leads Mexico in the production of gold, lead and zinc.
- El Palacio de Hierro: A chain of Mexican upscale department stores. It means “The Iron Palace” in English.
- Grupo Nacional Provincial: The only insurance company in Mexico owned entirely by Mexicans.
Baillères is also the leader of the board for ITAM (the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México, or Mexico Autonomous Institute of Technology). One of Mexico’s premier research universities, it is frequently listed as the best undergraduate school in Accounting, Business and many other disciplines and enjoys one of the best reputations of any Mexican school.
